These wooden sandals, often referred to as 'charbat' or 'chappal,' originate from the Swat Valley region of Pakistan. They were handcrafted by local artisans, utilizing wood for the main body and leather or animal hide for the straps, reflecting the available resources and cultural practices of the time. Note: the straps are not included in this antique pair, but you can see where they would have been attached.

These sandals are not merely footwear but also serve as cultural artifacts, showcasing the intricate woodworking skills and artistic traditions of the region. The carved motifs often carry symbolic meanings or represent traditional patterns passed down through generations. Their preservation and display in collections highlight their historical and ethnographic value, offering a glimpse into the daily lives and craftsmanship of past communities.
